Open House & Job Fair Set for St. Ann Center-Bucyrus Campus

December 17, 2019/0 Comments/in blog, Bucyrus Campus, Events, Press Releases, Stories /by St. Ann Center

St. Ann Center’s Bucyrus Campus will host an Open House & Community Resource Fair, 3 to 6 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 7th. This marks the fifth anniversary of the award-winning intergenerational center, located at 2450 W. North Ave., which provides day care to children, frail elders and adults with disabilities.

The free event gives the community a chance to tour the center, meet staff and find out more about the services St. Ann Center offers. Besides providing both child and adult day care, the Bucyrus Campus operates a community medical clinic, a dental clinic for patients with special needs, a state-of-the-art dementia care wing and an overnight respite, providing a short break to caregivers.

Those interested in employment with St. Ann Center can learn about job openings for Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, teachers, dietary aides, maintenance positions, a swimming pool manager and more.

Visitors have a chance to win exciting door prizes, including a pool party in the center’s warm-water pool, a massage from a St. Ann Center massage therapist, and gift baskets for children and adults. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Representatives from a variety of local businesses and service organizations will also be on hand. The resource fair will feature: MATC, Marquette University College of Nursing, the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, Employ Milwaukee, BizStarts entrepreneur mentoring, Neu-Life Community Development, Fondy Food Center, the Starr Group Insurance, Associate Bank and AARP.

St. Ann Center’s 2019 Gala Breaks Record!

August 20, 2019/0 Comments/in Company News, Press Releases, Stories /by Tyler Copes

The 15th annual Dream Together Gala was an historic one for St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care. A record-breaking $291,000 was raised, thanks to friends and supporters of the center who gathered at Discovery World Museum Aug. 16. The event benefits the nationally acclaimed day care program that provides health and educational services to children, older adults and people with disabilities, all under one roof.

A highlight of the evening:  the donation of an accessible bus by Milwaukee-based specialty vehicle maker REV Group. The bus will make it possible for clients in wheelchairs to participate in regular outings.

Other funds raised will support the dementia care program and the Gardetto Family Dental Clinic at St. Ann Center’s Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The clinic is the only one in the state that exclusively serves people with severe disabilities that prevent them from being cared for in a traditional dental clinic.

Proceeds from the gala also support St. Ann Center’s Care Champions program, which directly benefits clients who have no means to pay for services they desperately need. St. Ann Center serves Milwaukee at two facilities—the Bucyrus Campus and the Stein Campus at 2801 E. Morgan Ave.

The evening featured jewelry designed and handcrafted by Sr. Edna Lonergan, OSF, founder and CEO of St. Ann Center; live and silent auctions; a catered dinner by Bartolotta Restaurants, and music by Adekola & Friends and The Mixx Vocal Band.

The Big Dream Sponsors for the gala include Marji Singer, BMO Harris Bank, Northwestern Mutual, Catalyst Construction and many other generous donors. The gala, first held in 2005, is an annual event hosted by Carol Nevins Cannon and Craig and Susie Nevins in honor of their mother, Florence Nevins, and her devotion to St. Ann Center.

Questions about ways to support St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care can be directed to Casey Rozanski at (414) 977-5062 or crozanski@stanncenter.org.

All of Us Gospel Sunday Planned at St. Ann Center Indaba Band Shell

July 31, 2019/0 Comments/in Bucyrus Campus, Events, Press Releases /by St. Ann Center

Enjoy an afternoon of music, health and community at the All of Us Gospel Sunday, set for 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 11 at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care’s Bucyrus Campus. The free public event will take place on the grounds of the new Indaba Band Shell, 2450 W. North Ave.

This family-friendly gathering includes food, music from area church choirs and fun activities for all ages. Also featured is a visit by the All of Us Journey Bus which is traveling the country to raise awareness about the All of Us research program.

Tours of the All of Us Journey Bus include interactive, informational kiosks and videos that explain the program which aims to gather data from a million people or more. The findings will help develop medicines and treatments tailored to individual patients, known as precision medicine.

Wisconsin joined the national All of Us research program in 2017 and launched in Milwaukee in 2018. Our state is in its second year of this 10-year research program. The aim is to be as inclusive as possible in collecting information—making sure adults from various age groups, races, genetic ancestries, environments and walks of life are represented in the research.

Highlighting the event are performances by the Milwaukee area’s finest church choirs. The entertainment line-up includes the Amazing Grace Chorus, made up of people living with dementia and their caregivers and sponsored by the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute; Parklawn Assembly of God Praise Dancers; Lyons of Judah Ministries; General Baptist State Convention Mass Choir and St. Matthew C.M.E. Church Choir.

Guests are welcome to bring lawn chair and blankets. Seating is limited.

You’re Invited! See New Spaces at St. Ann Center-Bucyrus!

June 3, 2019/0 Comments/in Bucyrus Campus, Events, Press Releases /by St. Ann Center

African drums will call Milwaukeeans to the city’s north side on Friday, June 7, to join St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care at the Completion Celebration for its Bucyrus Campus at 2450 W. North Ave. The event, set for 1-3 p.m., will give the public a chance to explore several new additions to the center, which provides child and adult day care and health and educational services to the community.

The newly finished spaces include a Dementia Care Wing, Overnight Respite Care Unit, indoor Aquatic Center, Art Studio, Beauty Salon, Band Shell and Childcare Classrooms. The Bucyrus Campus opened in September of 2015 with these spaces left unfinished. A successful capital campaign and a $5 million grant from Wisconsin’s capital budget, received in 2017, allowed the $28 million two-story, 80,000-square-foot facility to be completed this spring.

“These new spaces are part of a renewal I see happening throughout this community,” said Sr. Edna Lonergan, St. Ann Center founder and CEO. “The band shell will draw talented people from the neighborhood who haven’t had an audience before. Our expanded dementia care and overnight respite will allow people to go to work knowing their loved ones are receiving compassionate care. And our warm-water swimming pool will help ensure our children know how to swim.” Nationally, 70% of African-American children, 58% of Hispanic children and 40% of white children have little or no swimming ability.

The celebration will begin at the Indaba (Swahili for “gathering place”) Band Shell at 1 p.m. with the untying of a kente cloth bow. Remarks will be made by U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore; Kaylan Haywood II, representative for Wisconsin’s 16th Assembly District; Russell W. Stamper II, 15th District Alderman; Supreme Moore Omokunde, 10th District County Supervisor and Sr. Diana De Bruin, Associate Director of Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Bishop James Schuerman of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will assist with the ribbon untying.

Other program highlights include a Native American eagle dance, a multicultural blessing and libation ceremony and a performance by the Parklawn Assembly of God Praise Dancers. Following the program, the public is invited inside for guided tours of the other new spaces, all scheduled to begin operation this year. Refreshments and entertainment by Christopher’s Project will also be featured, and a Trade Fair featuring north side entrepreneurs will be held on the second floor of the building’s beautiful indoor intergenerational park.

St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care thanks all the outstanding community-based organizations, businesses and donors who have supported the creation of the Bucyrus Campus—a replication of St. Ann Center’s Stein Campus, located on Milwaukee’s south side for 36 years. Featuring a unique intergenerational model, the center provides community-based health and educational day services to children, frail elders and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities, while providing resources and support to their caregivers. Services open to the community include a medical clinic and a specialized dental clinic which exclusively serves people with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Brunch Planned for Families Grieving Loss from Violence

January 21, 2019/0 Comments/in Bucyrus Campus, Press Releases /by St. Ann Center

People who have lost loved ones to violence are invited to share a meal and their stories at a brunch on Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care-Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The free program, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mothers and fathers who have lost children and youth coping with the death of a parent, other relative or friend are asked to explore the topic, “Where do we go from here?” The event is sponsored by Stop the Violence 53206, a Milwaukee youth program founded by Trinika Walker, who lost her 17-year-old son to gun violence last August.

Families are often the “hidden victims” behind the newspaper headlines, police investigations and court trials, Walker said, left to face the trauma of what has happened. “The aim of our event is to get these people talking and sharing their emotions,” she added. “They need to realize they’re not alone.”

The brunch will be hosted by Woosie Tidwell, who lost three family members during one violent chain of events. Guest speakers include Shonta Anderson, a nurse and women’s advocate who will discuss grieving and how to move beyond it. Akesha Burks, founder of Motivating All Youth, will share motivational messages for parents, and Lashandra Simmons will lead a youth discussion.

Kid-friendly activities are planned for young children. For more information about the event, contact Trinika Walker at 414-501-6477.
