Adult Day Care & Personal Hygiene Services in Milwaukee

Adult services – like a daycare program, specialized dementia care, personal hygiene care, and temporary overnight respite care — give older adults and people with disabilities a chance to remain healthier and live longer in their own homes.

Compassionate Care

Adults in our day program receive compassionate and cost-effective care, nutritious meals and activities to keep them moving. Plus they get an important additional benefit: their regular interactions with children in our childcare spark renewed sense of purpose and heighten engagement.

More Out of Life

In sharing time with children, adults talk and smile more, and join in more activities, from storytelling to music to art. That includes physical activities incorporating movement–rolling a ball, playing balloon volleyball or raising the play parachute. Besides providing their loved ones with essential care, supervision, and social interaction, we give family caregivers the time and support they need to work or meet other obligations.

Support Our Mission

Our Adult Care Programs

St. Ann Center strives to give mature adults and those challenged with disabilities a chance to remain independent longer.

From morning exercise to lunch with friends and an afternoon filled with activities and socializing, we help the frail elders and adults of all ages with disabilities that we serve feel like part of the family.

Adult day services are available from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday. (They are also available 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Saturday and Sunday through our overnight respite care program – no overnight stay required).

Adult Services include:
  • Care. Medical care from an RN or LPN and help with personal hygiene and grooming (including dental hygiene), continence and mobility are provided by qualified personal care workers.
  • Nutrition. A hot lunch and snack are served daily. Special dietary needs can be met, including tube feeding.
  • Fun. There are plenty of opportunities to socialize with daily exercise, field trips and swimming in our Aquatic Center’s warm-water, wheelchair-accessible pool.
  • Creativity. Our adults can express themselves and learn new skills through music and art. In St. Ann Center’s fully equipped art studios, they can participate in a variety of enjoyable projects — drawing, painting, jewelry making and more!
  • Wellness. Care of mind, body and spirit is nurtured through emotional and spiritual support, outpatient physical and occupational therapy, and hair and nail services at the Ageless Beauty Salon (Stein Campus)
  • Personal Attention. A low staff-to-client ratio allows us to get to know our adults and their unique interests, skills and needs.

It’s often challenging to meet the personal hygiene needs of an elderly loved one with disabilities. We offer hygiene care services such as whirlpool baths to help caregivers meet those needs.

Private, personalized bathing care in wheelchair-accessible tubs, with a personal care assistant, is available to any community member (with health clearance from a physician), not just those enrolled in our day program.

Adult Care Services FAQs

Please contact our Adult Services intake coordinator at the campus you are interested in for an individual consultation based on your loved one’s condition. We’re successfully able to care for many adults with a variety of disabilities. While wish we could provide care for everyone who needs it, but there are some people who are not a good fit for an adult day program.

If your loved one qualifies for a public funding source, it may cost them nothing out of pocket. Our Adult Services intake coordinator at the campus you’re interested in can help you see if they might qualify.

For individuals who pay privately, rates will vary depending on a person’s capabilities (and this typically is not covered by health insurance). People with higher care needs require more staff assistance. Contact our Adult Services intake coordinator at the campus you are interested in for an individual consultation.

Besides our adult day program, we offer a number of wraparound services, including assisted bathing in our whirlpool tubs; outpatient physical and occupational therapy; a warm-water, wheelchair-accessible pool; music therapy; hair and nail care; temporary overnight respite care; and a special needs dental clinic for adults and children. These services are open to the community, not just day program clients.

Yes! Bathing services are by appointment only, and we require a physician’s health clearance before you may schedule an appointment. For more information, contact our Adult Services director at the campus you are interested in.

Overnight Respite FAQs

Available 24/7/365, St. Ann Center’s temporary overnight respite care service lets frail elders and adults with special needs stay from one to 21 days in bed-and-breakfast-style private rooms, with compassionate care provided by trained caregivers. Clients may join the adult day program activities, but they do not need to be enrolled in the day program to stay overnight.

Adults age 18 or older who can safely participate. Individuals who need assistance with personal care and activities of daily living are eligible unless highly specialized skills are required to safely care for them.

Individuals whose behavior requires physical intervention or disrupts the peaceful stay of other guests. Individuals who require skilled nursing (such as insulin, colostomy care and wound care) are generally not eligible.

The application process for a new guest, on average, takes two to three weeks, and includes:

  • Completion of intake paperwork/guest information packet
  • Results of recent physical and TB test (done by guest’s health care provider) returned to St. Ann Center Overnight Respite Department
  • Plan of care meeting with Respite Nurse
  • Meeting with Nurse to drop off medications that will be needed during the stay and to sign a contract
  • Schedule and complete a trial night when guest meets staff and becomes acclimated to St. Ann Center’s Overnight Respite. Upon successful completion, you can make your reservations for an initial stay. Subsequent stays may be arranged more quickly.

The earlier the better. For someone looking to book an initial stay, be aware that it can take a month or more to obtain the required physician’s clearance, do an initial assessment, arrange an on-site visit and more. Subsequent stays offer a little more flexibility, but be aware that weekends and holidays book up fast.
