The jazz legend and MSO Principal Pops Conductor performs Sept. 19 with keyboard great Bobby Floyd.
Indaba Nights fans, jazz aficionados and fans of the MSO, get ready for an “Indaba Encore” that will bring the free summer concert series to a swingin’ and soulful end for 2024! Byron Stripling, the jazz trumpet virtuoso and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s new Stein Family Foundation Principal Pops Conductor, will take to the Indaba Band Shell with fellow jazz great, keyboardist Bobby Floyd on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6-7 p.m.
“From Spirituals to Swing!” is a free, one-hour concert featuring Stripling’s signature charm, soulful singing style and virtuoso trumpet talent, accompanied by Floyd’s stirring piano flair. “When I was a kid they used to say, ‘The trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised.’ That was all I needed to hear to ignite my love of the trumpet,” Stripling has said of his love for the instrument. “Combine the sound of my father’s Louis Armstrong records echoing through the house 24/7, and I had no choice but to sign up for a lifetime love affair with the trumpet.”
“I am so delighted by this exciting new partnership with MSO, one that also allows us to help introduce Milwaukee to this jazz great,” said Gloria Miller, special events director for St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care. “It’s a dream come true to have Mr. Stripling — who has played Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, who has played with Dizzy Gillespie and Woody Herman, with the Count Basie Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and even starred as Louis Armstrong on Broadway — appear on our Indaba Band Shell stage. That speaks volumes for our ongoing efforts to make Indaba Nights the summer concert series and place to be in this community and beyond.”
Concert attendees are encouraged to bring camp chairs (a limited number of folding chairs will be available on the paved area in front of the stage) or blankets for seating on the grassy hill. Food and beverages will be available for purchase; coolers are also allowed. The band shell is located to the rear of the St. Ann Center Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. in Milwaukee, and has paved, accessible walkways from the parking lot to the stage.
