Milwaukeeans of all ages visited Mayor Tom Barrett on Monday, June 6, to celebrate the City’s recognition as a 2016 America’s Best Intergenerational Community. The award, sponsored by MetLife Foundation and Generations United, recognizes Milwaukee for its leadership and innovation in creating an outstanding place to live for children, youth and older adults.
A flag, road sign and certificate were presented to Mayor Barrett by a group representing more than 60 local organizations that were spotlighted in the award application for creating positive bonds between the generations. St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care co-authored the application along with the Mayor’s Office.
In April, a Milwaukee delegation accepted the award in Washington D.C., and met with representatives of Senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin regarding the importance of enabling all ages to share their talents and support each other in relationships that benefit both individuals and the community.
Meeting with Mayor Barrett were Sister Edna Lonergan, president of St. Ann Center; members of the Center’s Buddy Program, a youth service learning program; representatives of the Milwaukee County Department on Aging; older adult advocates and children from Milwaukee Public Schools.
In recognition of the City’s commitment to engaging all ages in community issues, Milwaukee will be the host city of the 2017 Global Intergenerational Conference, June 13-16. The conference is co-hosted by St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care and Generations United.
