Indaba Band Shell Fundraiser Features Family Entertainment

Jump on the bandwagon to celebrate the arts and talents of Milwaukee’s near north side at the Band Shell Build Up. The evening of entertainment, set for Saturday, January 30, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., is the kick-off of a fundraising campaign for the construction of a 350-seat band shell. The event is presented by The Alternative in addition Parklawn Assembly of God Church and St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care, who are partners in building the bandshell.

The groundbreaking for the Indaba Band Shell is scheduled for June and will be located at St. Ann Center’s Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Avenue. “In traditional African culture, ’Indaba’ refers to a gathering to resolve issues affecting the village,” said Tony Phillips, director of the band shell project. “The band shell will bring together youth, adults, families, people with disabilities and our elderly. It will showcase and celebrate the talents in our neighborhoods right where the community can enjoy it.” The band shell will host everything from concerts, dance performances and neighborhood festivals to church services, Phillips said.

Headlining the family-friendly kick-off event is Daniel Harris & The Next Level Band. Other performances include spoken word, comedy, praise dance, Christian rap and worship. There will also be an open mic time for the community. Food and refreshments will be available from local vendors. Advance admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children, and free for age 6 and under. Adult admission is $20 at the door.
