Clients at the Stein have been busy over the past month planting vegetable, herb and flower plants—many of which they started from seed during the blustery days of February and March.
The children and adults are growing varieties of tomatoes, peppers, greens, potatoes, onions, herbs, petunias and more, among several patio growing spaces on campus. Gardening tasks such watering, weeding and harvesting encourages clients to work together while increasing self-esteem and purpose, sharpening memory and focus, improving motor skills and heightening sensory experiences.
Clients recently picked and presented lettuce, scallions and herbs to the kitchen staff to use in their lunch preparation.
As clients learn about how plants grow, the seasonal availability of produce and new ways to enjoy vegetables, they’re looking forward to their favorite part of gardening—harvest time!
