Brunch Planned for Families Grieving Loss from Violence

By January 21, 2019No Comments2 min read

People who have lost loved ones to violence are invited to share a meal and their stories at a brunch on Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care-Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The free program, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mothers and fathers who have lost children and youth coping with the death of a parent, other relative or friend are asked to explore the topic, “Where do we go from here?” The event is sponsored by Stop the Violence 53206, a Milwaukee youth program founded by Trinika Walker, who lost her 17-year-old son to gun violence last August.

Families are often the “hidden victims” behind the newspaper headlines, police investigations and court trials, Walker said, left to face the trauma of what has happened. “The aim of our event is to get these people talking and sharing their emotions,” she added. “They need to realize they’re not alone.”

The brunch will be hosted by Woosie Tidwell, who lost three family members during one violent chain of events. Guest speakers include Shonta Anderson, a nurse and women’s advocate who will discuss grieving and how to move beyond it. Akesha Burks, founder of Motivating All Youth, will share motivational messages for parents, and Lashandra Simmons will lead a youth discussion.

Kid-friendly activities are planned for young children. For more information about the event, contact Trinika Walker at 414-501-6477.
