Unifying generations through mutual respect and understanding

A service learning program for youth ages 11 to 15

The Buddy Program is an educational mentoring project aimed at strengthening intergenerational relations and increasing respect for diversity. Run in collaboration with the Milwaukee County Department on Aging and local schools, the program connects youth with older adults and people with disabilities in Milwaukee area senior centers. The youth are involved in activities designed to re-enforce compassion and create a caring, peaceful community.

Teen and Adult Buddy
The Buddy Program helps young participants:

  • Practice skills needed to secure and maintain a job
  • Enhance self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment
  • Learn to budget money
  • Build decision-making skills
  • Develop social skills
  • Learn they can make a difference in the life of another person
  • Provide service to the underserved in the community
  • Break down generational barriers through mutual respect and understanding

Buddy Program activities:

  • Assisting with lunch and snack time
  • Reading stories/newspaper
  • Playing games/creating art projects
  • Sharing life stories and experiences
  • Participating in spiritual formation
