Donation Helps Babies Sleep More Safely

By March 24, 2021No Comments3 min read

Babies and parents are resting easier thanks to a life-saving gift Children’s Community Health Plan (CCHP) donated to St. Ann Center. Two hundred sleep sacks were given to the center’s childcare program by CCHP, an HMO affiliate of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

A type of comfy wearable blanket, a sleep sack is specifically designed to keep babies under age 1 safe and warm—replacing loose blankets that may become sleeping hazards. According to current Milwaukee data (2019 to date), approximately 25% of infant deaths in the city were sleep-related.

“We’re happy to provide sleep sacks to St. Ann Center, knowing the great work you do caring for infants and reaching out to neighborhood families,” said Linda Schauf, manager of the CCHP Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby program. Along with two sizes of sleep sacks—for newborns, and for infants ages 6 to 12 months—educational materials were provided in English and Spanish, explaining how to create a safe infant sleep environment.

“St. Ann Center is thrilled to be able to use these sleep sacks in our infant rooms at both our north and south side campuses,” said Sr. Lucy Marindany, Vice President of Education and Childcare Services. “We’ll also offer them to parents to use at home to help ensure there’s a safe sleep space for their little ones.”

Here are some tips from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health on keeping your baby safe while they sleep:

  • Keep your baby in your room close to your bed, but on a separate surface designed for infants—ideally for baby’s first year, but at least for the first 6 months.
  • Use a firm, flat sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet.
  • Baby should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch or on a chair alone, with you or with anyone else.
  • Don’t smoke or let anyone else smoke around your baby.
  • Dress your baby in sleep clothing, such as a sleep sack. Don’t use a loose blanket, and don’t over-bundle.
  • Don’t put pillows, blankets or crib bumpers anywhere in your baby’s sleep area.
  • Keep soft objects, toys and loose bedding out of your baby’s sleep area, and make sure nothing covers the baby’s head.
  • Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep, for naps and at night.
